Kunnen we de opwarming van de aarde afremmen door minder zonlicht op aarde toe te laten?

Het héél korte antwoord is “Ja, maar willen we dat?” Er zijn hiervoor verschillende technieken voorgesteld. Samen heten die: Solar Radiation Modification (SRM). Dat betekent letterlijk “Aanpassing van zonne-instraling”. Enkele manieren hiervan zijn technisch haalbaar, niet meteen maar wel binnen 5-20 jaar. En goed uitgevoerde SRM zou waarschijnlijk klimaatrisico’s doen afnemen maar niet alle aspecten van klimaatverandering opheffen. Ook brengt SRM veel politieke problemen met zich mee en is daarom erg ingewikkeld.
